Courtesy of burials and their accompanying grave goods, we know that most women seem to have worn outfits comprised of two or three layers, the first of which being a linen or woollen sleeved shift or underdress fastened at the neck with a small disc brooch and sometimes pleated there, too.

Viking clothing had styles of their own. The social class differences between people in Vikings Age society are very evident in the clothing they wore. From the style and cut of the outfit, the materials used and quality of the clothes pins which held it in place, is a clear indication of the owner's wealth and status within their community. The woman is wearing a white shift or underdress, a red overdress (hangerock or smokkr) and two characteristically Viking oval brooches - also known as tortoise brooches - linked by a chain to fasten her overdress. A spindle whorl hangs from her dress, too, here probably added to indicate the role Viking Age women played in textile production.
